Markham Vineyards Heritage Club Wines February 2015

Included in the November member package we have some great wines telling the flavor-tales of old and new! First off we have the 2014 Chardonnay, whose oak and butter seem to be defining characteristics of many modern day chardonnays, and while there are certainly elements of both in the 2014 vintage, our chardonnay flirts playfully between these two poles. The playfulness of this wine may be enjoyed on its own, or as Markham Winemaker, Kim Nicholls prefers, with a nice chunk of hard cheese and bread.

In both the Rock & Roll and Estate packages we have the 2013 Estate Merlot. By turns, muscular and delicate, the 2013 Estate Merlot bottling showcases the multifarious character for which Merlot is justifiably famous. Each sip unearths new layers of flavor ranging from lively cracked pepper and black licorice to more succulent tones of rich dark fruit. Possessed of a truly refined character, this wine recalls those from the highly respected Pomerol region of Bordeaux, and serves as a fitting testament to Kim’s experience and skill working with the Merlot grape.

Last but not least in the Estate Member package, packaged alongside the Estate Merlot, was the 2014 Zinfandel. Our 2014 Zin recalls the best examples of both Old World and New World Zinfandels while forging its own unique identity. A perfect antidote to many of today’s monstrously powerful Zins, the 2014 vintage is bright and lively while being grounded enough to avoid floating away—Kim’s suggests pairing with glazed short ribs, but Kip from our Visitor Center often says he has had plenty of luck with a simple peperoni pizza!

The Rock & Roll Club recieved the following wines:

Chardonnay 2014

Showy aromas of roasted hazelnuts and caramel-covered apples create a decadent first impression. The sur-lie barrel aging adds oodles of texture but also allows each swirl of the glass to open up new aromas like nutmeg, vanilla and pineapple. The lush mouthfeel has just the right amount of acidity and juicy, ripe fruit character to pair your favorite meal. We enjoy our Chardonnay by the glass with a chunk of hard cheese and a slice or two of artisanal bread.

Estate Merlot 2013

This is the perfect wine to take to your Merlot-doubting Sideways friends! This Merlot is dense and powerful but still showing the sexy charm only Merlot can offer. Cherry jam, blackberry jam and briar aromas are layered with cola, vanilla toast, black pepper, and licorice. The lush, rich entry on the palate is balanced, though the tannins grip tightly at the finish and will allow for many years of aging. Serving our Estate Merlot with slow-roasted short ribs over a bed of creamy polenta will certainly provide a happy pairing.

The Estate Club recieved the following wines:

Zinfandel 2014

Our Zinfandel features several different blocks of old vine fruit from Markham growers who just happen to have a bit of this juicy grape hiding on their property. Napa Valley from St. Helena north to Calistoga is referred to by the locals as ‘up-valley.’ And, up-valley is a hot bed for sourcing old vine grapes! More than a third of the vines in our Zinfandel are over 100 years old, while the balance is in the prime of life at 25-40 years of age. Before being blended, the Zin on its own is a bright & lively wine.

Estate Merlot 2013

In the heart of Napa Valley, our Yountville Estate has an amazing lineage spanning over 140 years. Located on a hillside benchland, the well-drained soils are relatively thin due to their position atop the ancient alluvial fans. The Merlot budwood selections were originally taken from the famed Three Palms Vineyard. Our favorite Merlot block, atop the knoll, produces intensely flavored berries of miniscule size. The volcanic ash soils at the ranch are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and exhibit a chalky texture in our wines. The recently replanted Cabernet Franc allowed us to maintain a portion of our "suitcase" clonal selection but also add the La Jota Vineyard selection, from the first ever varietal bottled Cabernet Franc in California. This blend comes together in much the same harmony in which it grows in the field.
