Markham Vineyards Heritage Club Wines February 2015

It was a bit of a rough and tumble start to the year. With its dawning, there is always the looming ire of taxes and for many this is a bane. We then had the wrath of Mother Nature as she wielded her mammoth governance of winter storms upon us. Yet we persevered because there is wine. There is always wine. Nothing is certain but bad weather, taxes and the happiness wine brings. So let us all come together to forget about our woes and celebrate the joys of wine!

So what wines will bring you joy in February? For the Rock & Roll members we included the tried and trusted flavors of wonderment found inside the delicious 2015 Sauvignon Blanc. The Blanc is accompanied by the old world style 2013 Zinfandel whose delectable essences bear the lineage of fruit born more than 100 years ago!

Not to be rivaled, the Estate members received the 2015 Pinot Noir. Not a tepid Pinot, this wine is a bit brash and sassy, like a feisty teenager who you want to send to a dark room to contemplate their actions. Then, after a few years, you will be rewarded as you unveil a mature adult who you’d be delighted to take to dinner!  The Pinot is joined by the remarkably tasty and much-loved 2012 Altruist. What a wine! Winemaker, Kimberlee Nicholls, created a beautiful story in a bottle that tells of all the love and devotion she has for making exquisitely enjoyable wines that will bring you joy!

Sauvignon Blanc 2015 - 750ml

Ruby grapefruit and pineapple fruit races through the soul of our 2015 Sauvignon Blanc. The classic honeydew melon is layered with tangerine zest aromas. A decidedly juicy texture brings all the pineapple, grapefruit and honeydew notes on the palate together with the brightness of kiwi fruit flavors. A glass would be a wonderful way to start the evening on the patio unwinding from the day.

Zinfandel 2013 - 750ml

This is everything that Zinfandel should be! It is in your face with cherry vanilla lifesaver character paired with a cup of coffee as you peruse the cigars in the humidor. Jammy fruit aromas are pretty but spiced up with tobacco and black pepper. Ripe cherry fruit is creamy, but has brightness that makes this an excellent food wine with tannins that grip through to the end. Try with hoisin glazed ribs and a spicy mango slaw or pepperoni pizza should work well too.

Pinot Noir 2015 - 750ml

The 2015 vintage produced another wine that can be aged for several years as the dark cranberry color attests. Sour cherry fruit is layered with caramel, vanilla and toasty oak. Creamy and velvety entry allows the ripe, cherry flavors to fill the mid-palate. The youthful tannins grip through the finish to allow pairing with heartier fare. We enjoy Pinot Noir with planked salmon over a bed of grains tossed with arugula and herb vinaigrette.

The Altruist Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 - 750ml

Intoxicating in its complexity, the terroir from our Calistoga estate never disappoints. Blueberry jam and Satsuma plum fruit are the backbone for cocoa powder, coffee and cola aromas. If you’re observant, you might even get a note of cinnamon, lavender and cotton candy like we did? This wine always shows a decidedly feminine vibe with a juicy texture married to rich fruit character and sexy, lush tannins. You might not want to share this wine with anyone except your true love and a blanket under the stars. Don’t say you weren’t warned about how enchanted you will be by this lady!
