At the southern end of the Rutherford bench in the heart of Napa Valley, a total of 100 acres are planted of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Originally planted over 130 years ago, wines from these vines have always achieved accolades. Ancient volcanic action created alluvial fans below the well-drained clay loam and Coombs gravelly loam soils. White, chalky soils are most evident on the western slopes of the property. In combination with the bay controlled fog intrusion zone of Yountville, this ranch has proven an ideal terroir backdrop for the cherry/sour cherry characteristics present in these wines. Merlot clonal selections hail from the ‘Three Palms’ ranch in Napa Valley, whereas our Cabernet Franc came over from Bordeaux in a suitcase! Most recent replantings focus on new Cabernet clones, tighter spacing and ultimately switching row direction.
