What’s not to love about the holiday festivities especially, with everyone on their best behavior (even Coco, pictured above!) as they try to stay in Santa’s good graces? But if you’re anything like me, you are trying to wrap up a million things at work so you can relax & enjoy with everyone else. I am not one of those people who has shopped & wrapped it all in August because harvest has me preoccupied with tasks at hand.

We are still moving our 2014 red wines down to barrels. Plus, we’re trying to get our 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon out of barrels so I can get it bottled in January. Did I mention the bottling room is full of barrels? I am making a list and checking it twice to make sure all of our glass, corks and capsules are ordered to bring those bottles of Markham to a store near you. Can you feel my rising panic? Good thing that my family loves wine - so I guess maybe I have a few people on my list done?

With all the celebrating and special gatherings everyone attends during the next few weeks, take a bit of time to dig through your wine stash. Find a gem or two to you have forgotten, maybe like the 20-year-old bottle of Markham Petite Sirah I found recently. Old tannic bottles of wine have staying power and are bound to provoke conversation. Or maybe you have a magnum that would be too gluttonous to drink yourself - parties love big bottles! I always take the opportunity when multiple bottles will be consumed over the course of a long, decadent evening to share a vertical selection of Cabernet Sauvignon. I am thinking of opening the 2006-2010 vintages of our single vineyard estate Cabernet Sauvignons. This will pair fantastically with the prime rib my mom will put on the table for Christmas dinner. But you could just as easily use the same vintage and select bottles of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon or Petit Verdot to see which pairs best?

From my winery family to yours, I wish you all safe travels, indulgent holiday feasts and an outstanding 2015!
